From health food store shelves to everyday news, CBD is in vogue. In fact, there have been speculations that Coca-Cola is looking to make a beverage that contains CBD, CBD’s own way of going mainstream. This might bring to life Coca Cola’s old slogan, “Have a Coke and Get a Smile.” Here is how CBD can make you smile some more:

CBD Hemp Oil 101

One of the major components that makes CBD oil is cannabidiol, a hemp plant extract. It is part of the diverse compound contained in the hemp plants, commonly dubbed cannabinoids. These components have been known to promote health and keep people’s immune systems resilient to environmental changes. They do this through binding with the cell receptors of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS, which was discovered in 1992, is meant to maintain homeostasis (balance) in the body through the regulation of basic body functions like memory, mood, appetite, pain, and sleep. It can be considered the body’s “master control.”

The Bliss Molecule and CBD

CBD interacts with the body in two ways. While it binds with ECS receptors, it also has a key role to play in preventing the breakdown of anandamide, which allows this key compound to build up in the body to more effective levels.

As a neurotransmitter, anandamide is produced by the body as a derivative from arachidonic acid. It gets its name from the Sanskrit word- Ananda- meaning “pleasure, happiness, delight, and joy.” (This is why it is also referred to as the “bliss molecule”).

CBD and Unlocking the Bliss Molecule

Everyone has the FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase) enzyme. FAAH breaks down anandamide once it enters a cell, which makes it a killjoy. Ideally, CBD simply interferes with the breakdown of anandamide by FAAH, prolonging the feeling of bliss.

This prevention of the breakdown of anandamide results in reverse stress-induced anxiety and improved mood in rodents, according to a study that was published in Translational Psychiatry. The study linked stress, fear, and anxiety to low levels of anandamide in the body.

While CBD is both safe and non-psychoactive, it can influence your body and make you high on life.
